As a Jewish family, we hid in an attic in Amsterdam to escape the Nazis. My sister Margot and I set down our deepest thoughts in a diary addressed to Kitty. The sunset at dusk outside the window left me spellbound, as if something had spellbound me. I also wrote down a series of dreams about freedom. But as months went by, I slowly began to get tired of living in hiding.
